- SUPERB stands for Students United with Parents and Educators to Resolve Bullying.
- The program is geared towards 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. This program began in 2003/2004 as a pilot program, funded by a private donor, an early executive of the Internet search engine Yahoo. The program was initially run through the family therapy and conflict resolution departments of Nova Southeastern University. In 2004/2005, the program was picked up by the Broward Sheriff’s office and is now funded by them in
the public schools.
- The program is tailored to the social context of each school, allowing for cultural, economic, and neighborhood diversity. In addition, the curriculum is individualized to the needs of each classroom or age grouping. Mrs. Kathy Zoga, St. Jerome’s Social Justice Program Coordinator, works with teachers and parents to develop goals, checking in with both teachers and parents throughout the program. With the children, the program works through eight steps, from the importance of cooperation and teamwork, through
specific skills for defending self and others from bullies, to implementing these skills in practice. Artwork, role-play, short stories, books, discussions, reflective writing, and games are used to teach and practice these skills.
